Newly-formed School of Social Work Draws National Accolades for Program

UNC Charlotte’s Social Work program has swiftly grown from its origins as a concentration unit within the Department of Sociology and Anthropology into a stand-alone program that is now drawing national recognition. The program first began in the 1970s, eventually growing into a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)-accredited Bachelor of Social Work program by 1995. In 2002, the Department of Social Work was created, leading to the addition of CSWE-accredited Master of Social Work program in 2004. And now in 2014 Social Work has transformed into the School of Social Work.

Dr. Vivian Lord, Interim Director of the School of Social Work, says that the transition was simple due to the high quality work of professor scholars. According to Dr. Lord, the Department of Social Work was already doing the work that a School would do.

The school’s mission is to prepare competent and effective social work professionals at both generalist and advanced levels. The program also seeks to develop social work knowledge and provide leadership in the development and evaluation of service delivery systems.

U.S. News magazine recently ranked UNC Charlotte School of Social Work as #66 out of the Top 100 Social Work Masters programs in the U.S. And SocialWorkDegreeGuide.com named the program as the #1 most affordable school for earning a Master of Social Work degree, recognizing its “high quality standards” that come with an affordable price.
